With the arrival of spring, many are taking a fresh, clean approach to their daily routines. Nonprofits should not be excluded. Review the following nonprofit spring-cleaning tips to get started:

  1. Are your bylaws current? Review your bylaws to ensure you are following established guidelines. If your committees, meeting frequency, board structure, or any other items listed in your bylaws have changed, it’s time to update.
  1. Is your registered agent listing with the Secretary of State’s office current? Check your nonprofit information on the Secretary of State’s website to ensure all information is current (especially your mailing address) so you will receive any important information from the State. 1. Does your board represent the community you serve and have the skill set you need? Start identifying possible new board members so you have the expertise you need.
  1. Dust off those old files! Make sure you are following guidance for retaining records.  Review the IRS’s website for Recordkeeping Requirements and more information.
  1. Make sure your bank reconciliations are current. The easiest way to reduce fraud risk is to stay on top of your bank reconciliations and bank statement review. For more guidance, read our Bank Statement Review Guidelines.
