Every year, nonprofit organizations are required to file the appropriate version of the Form 990 series with the IRS. What many organizations overlook is that Form 990 is more than a compliance requirement—it’s a powerful storytelling tool.Form 990

Because Form 990 is publicly available, anyone can request a copy. Potential donors, grantmakers, board candidates, and even vendors often review Form 990 to learn about an organization’s mission, programs, and financial health. In fact, for many stakeholders, Form 990 serves as a primary source of information about a nonprofit.

Why Form 990 Matters:

  • Donors and Grantmakers use Form 990 to confirm that your programs align with your mission and to evaluate governance, policies, and compliance.
  • Board Candidates look for organizations that share their values and demonstrate transparency and impact.
  • Vendors and Service Providers review Form 990 to determine whether their products or services fit your organization’s needs.

Readers want to see clear evidence of progress toward your goals, how your programs reflect your mission, and the effectiveness of your fundraising efforts. Both the narrative and numerical sections matter. This is your chance to differentiate your organization—but keep your narratives simple, truthful, and impactful.
